Dust in Khartoum

by Babatunde Ola Sanyaolu

Thorns in the land and tracers in ruthless exchange,

Hacking cough from weapons’ mouth in midrange

Obliterates all trust in the two watchmen,

Reverse patriotism inflicted on countrymen.

Narratives of inhumanity rend the air,

Shadows of life darkened more and more in despair.

Tears and lamentations for murdered hosts and guests,

Effulgent lives terminated in prime in power-mad quests.

Ashen describes the living,

Rapid fire-guns singing in concerts countermoving,

Seizing up all hands of ceasefire approving.

And the two Generals of the centrepiece,

None taking a retreat for peace:

Damning betrayal of the nation’s bliss.

Treachery with brutality against humanity,

Raconteurs will not narrate this disunity.

Esprit de corps melting into dog eat dog

As the  watchmen reinforce the smog.

Cities of gold going down in fratricidal crossfire

Hanging back from voices for concurrent ceasefire.

Endearment in reciprocity do assure,

Reanimation of esprit de corps do ensure,

Yachting back this broken vessel to Harmony Shore.
